Equipment is generally designed to operate on the lowest practible viscosity, since the ligther fluids give lower friction and better transfer rates. However, if loads or temperatures are high, more viscous and less volatile lubricants are required.
MOLYBDENUM added to any oil application will reduce friction at all temperatures up to 750 degrees F and even out the viscosity index to protect against oxydation.
UNDERSURFACE lubricants will neutralize all agents in the fuel and oil that result in the formation of acids, sludges and oxidants which interfere with the primary function of the lubricant.
| ENGINE OILS | VISCOSITY |
| SAE 10W | 60-90 |
| SAE 20W | 90-180 |
| SAE 30w | 180-280 |
| SAE 40W | 280-450 |
| SAE 50W | 450-800 |
| PRIMARY FUNCTIONS |
Lubricate piston rings, cylinders, valve gear, bearings, cool pistons. Prevent deposition on metal surfaces. |
| GEAR OILS | VISCOSITY |
| SAE 80 | 100-400 |
| SAE 90 | 400-1000 |
| SAE 140 | 1000-2000 |
| PRIMARY FUNCTIONS |
Prevent metal contact and wear of spur gears, hyphid gears, worm gears, cool gear cases. |
| APPLICATION | VISCOSITY | PRIMARY FUNCTIONS |
| Aviation engine oil | 220-700 | Same as engine oil |
| Torque converter fluid | 80-140 | Lubricate, transmit power |
| Hydraulic brake fluid | 35 | Transmit power |
| Refrigeration oils | 30-260 | Lubricate compressor pump |
| Steam turbine oil | 55-300 | Cool and lubricate gearing |
| Steam cylinder oil | 1500-3300 | Lubricate in presence of steam at high temperature |
